Description

This unit comes in two halves: Transport Processes and Reaction Engineering. Transport Processes considers balance equations for heat and mass transfer and their solution as illustrated on several unit operations. The aim is to introduce humidification and drying, allowing students to understand the principles of mass and heat transfer. It then goes into fundamental solutions to the underlying PDEs. The relevance of real world problems is given. The solution in a number of limiting cases is given. Process heat integration in plants is introduced, and Pinch analysis is covered. In Reaction Engineering 2 the course extends the treatment of chemical reactors given in CPE2012. It covers reaction kinetics (also including bi-molecular, concurrent, reversible and autocatalytic reactions), ideal reactors, semi-batch reactors, multiple reactions, production distribution, quantitative treatment of production distribution and optimization, multiple reactors in series and in parallel, recycle, the way in which real reactors deviate from the idealized ones, compartment model and the diagnosis of non-ideal reactors, the concept and use of residence time distribution rather than a single residence time and consideration of chemical rate processes in multiple reactions and autocatalytic processes, the use of dispersion model.
